Nerja News - Smoking ban hits Spanish Bars and restaurants

The new smoking ban is not to everyones liking

Sunday, January the 2nd, 2011, saw Spain introducing the most severe no smoking in public places law in the whole of Europe.

From this date, it is now illegal to smoke in bars, clubs and restaurants as well as in the general workplace as their first no smoking ban, passed in 2006, had already put in place, but with the choice placed on the owner to become smoking or non-smoking if the premises were under 100 square metres.

This choice is now taken away. There is to be no smoking at all. See more on Hub Pages site

All over Spain bars and restaurants have been adapting their open air facilities to increase the comfort of smokers who are no longer allowed to light up inside.
Since the new law that bans smoking in enclosed public places came into force on January 2nd, pavement terraces have acquired more outdoor heaters and awnings. Some bars have even started offering blankets to smokers sitting outside.

One restaurant, however, the Asador Guadalmina in Marbella, made the headlines as it became the first establishment to face a hefty fine for allowing smoking to continue on the premises..Read more of this report in the Sur in English online
